Nearly 30,000 Lbs. Of Fresh Ground Beef Recalled By Cargill

On July 22nd, Cargill recalled almost 30,000 pounds of fresh ground beef products due to the risk of Salmonella Enteritidis contamination. The recall affected products distributed across 7 states including Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Virginia and Vermont. So far, 33 people have become ill after consuming the 85% lean ground beef products produced at the Wyalusing, PA facility in May of this year. The FSIS (USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service) has named Hannaford Stores in those 7 states as the retail outlet which sold the possibly tainted ground beef. The problem was revealed when the FSIS was conducting an ongoing investigation in conjunction with the CDC and several other agencies regarding a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis in which they were analyzing 33 case-patients from the above-mentioned states. The agencies were able to link illnesses in 5 of these patients to the fresh ground beef products through in-store reviews as well as trace back and epidemiologic investigations. These illnesses began back in the second week of June. Five weeks have passed between that time and a recall being announced. As leaders in industrial traceability, Markem-Imaje understands the damaging effects a situation like this can have on a company's brand image and consumer trust, not to mention the substantial cost involved in initiating a recall. In this case, the ground beef products were sold in 14 lb. chub packages at wholesale; it is believed that the ground beef was then repackaged by Cargill customers for sale to the public. In 2009, Cargill ground beef products were recalled twice due to Salmonella outbreaks. Just last year, 136 people became ill after consuming Cargill ground turkey. As a manufacturer of food products, does your company have a reliable traceability system in place? While you hope a story like this one will never apply to your company, it happens all too often. Protect your brand reputation and consumers' trust in your products with a track and trace system which will allow you to remove your products from the supply chain quickly and efficiently. Markem-Imaje provides solutions to manufacturers by providing exceptional coding and marking systems, traceability systems and more.
