Food Labeling - GMO Labeling And Possible Consequences

GMO labeling has been a topic of hot debate for some time now. While many companies including General Mills and Campbell's have decided to label GMO foods, there are several real consequences according to food labeling news reports. Cost, confusion, ingredients, altering products by changing recipes - there's an entire laundry list of potential consequences. Here's what some of the latest reports claim. As companies alter products in order to avoid GMO ingredients, the taste often changes - in a not-so-good way. As some recipes are altered, vitamins are lost. When Ben & Jerry's changed the recipe of their Coffee Toffee Bar Crunch ice cream, consumers weren't pleased with the results. Many claimed on social media that flavors formerly containing Heath® Bar Crunch were no longer the same. Consumers have to watch closely for allergens. In the switch, sometimes new allergens are introduced into the product. When consumers have been purchasing a product for years, they often don't think to look at the ingredients to see if there is an allergen they or their children may be sensitive to. Changing ingredients can result in higher prices. It can take substantial time and effort to remove GMOs from ingredients, which can increase price. Labeling doesn't simply involve changing the text on the can; according to some, there is much more to consider including checking the recipes, reviewing the supply chain, exploring options for sourcing of ingredients, logistics . . . the list goes on. Confusing for consumers. Some manufacturers produce similar items with one containing meat, while the other doesn't. For instance, SpaghettiOs come in a meatless option, and there is also an option with meatballs. Meatball SpaghettiOs do not have to carry a GMO label, while the plain variety does. Very confusing for consumers. It's easy to see why there has been so much debate over GMO labeling. We'll have to wait and see how it all plays out in the future.
