Packaging - How Important Is GMO-Free For Brands In 2017?

As a supplier of TIJ printers, continuous inkjet printing solutions, TTO and other coding and marking systems, we're quite aware that today's consumers are more focused on eating healthier foods than ever before. GMOs (genetically modified organisms) have been a concern for some time now, but do they remain an issue in terms of labeling for brands? According to recent reports, apparently so - particularly among baby boomers and millennials.

While artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and flavors are avoided on a more intense level than GMOs according Mintel Reports' Free From Food Trends report, a substantial number of millennials and baby boomers make an effort to avoid GMOs. 29% of millennials actively avoid these foods, while 34% of baby boomers actively avoid them. It's really more of a focus on what's healthy in terms of foods that aren't processed or altered; those containing whole ingredients and considered organic/natural. Among all consumers it was found that the most important issue when looking at labels was finding foods that were "trans fat-free," an important factor for 27% of consumers buying any free-from food, while GMO-free was an issue for 13% of consumers.

It's clear to see that over the last four or five years GMO-free has become less of an issue. In fact, for the period beginning January 2012 through December of last year, there was a 5% decline in new foods introduced in North America claiming GMO-free on packaging, according to Mintel's Global New Products database.

All that said, baby boomers and millennials do want foods and beverages that are GMO-free. Mintel identified the top 10 beverage products of the food/beverage products launched in January of this year that include a GMO-free claim with the highest purchase intent. Ultimately, in terms of quality; taste; whether the product was perceived as organic, natural, or premium; and other attributes, consumers viewed these 10 GMO-free products superior to products without a GMO-free claim on nearly every point.

Clearly, GMO-free is still a critical issue for many consumers seeking better overall health. Following a new law introduced last year in Vermont requiring companies to label all GMO ingredients, some of the biggest brands made changes including Kellogg, General Mills, and others. To summarize it all up, it seems that GMO-free is still a very important issue for brands.
