Flexible Packaging - Green Opportunities For Ecommerce

For both brands and consumers, flexible packaging offers numerous benefits in a world that is turning more and more toward ecommerce for shopping for consumer goods - cosmetics, electronics, jewelry, clothing, shoes, even food and beverages.  In fact, it is expected that over the next three years (by 2020) online retail sales in the U.S. will reach $500 billion, according to research firm Forrester.  This is certainly good news for ecommerce brands, however those looking to operate a sustainable supply chain may find packaging challenging.  Could flexible packaging be the solution?

Flexible packaging not only reduces waste due to its protective barrier properties, it is also lighter to ship and takes up far less room in shipping than cardboard containers, boxes, and other types of packaging.  According to the FPA, a single truckload of flexible packaging is equivalent to 26 truckloads of glass jars.  Products packaged in flexible packaging are far more protected against damage if a spill or other incident involving liquids were to occur during the shipping process.

We all know that in the U.S. an enormous amount of food goes to waste; considering the multi-layered films that can be used in flexible packaging, foods are better protected against the infiltration of sunlight, moisture, and air, extending shelf life substantially over other types of more traditional packaging.  This is particularly important for ecommerce brands providing prepared meals and produce, a fast-growing market today.

Ultimately brand managers have the job of making consumers understand the many benefits of flexible packaging including lower shipping costs, extended shelf life, reduced waste, and how their online shopping habits are actually more environmentally friendly.
