Commonly Prescribed (And Addictive) Opioids Lack Informative Labels

Recently, the U.S. FDA conducted a two-day hearing which addressed the lack of critical information on many opioid painkiller medications prescribed by physicians. Opioids are medications designed to relieve pain, and contain a compound similar to opium which binds to one or more opioid receptors in the human body. Some of the most well-known include oxycodone (Percocet, OxyContin) and hydrocodone (Vicodin), and morphine. In 2010, there were over 16,000 opioid overdoses in the United States. Both family members and doctors are arguing for more effective labeling, labels which offer the critical information such as upper daily dosage and addiction warnings that labels now lack. The panel at the public hearing consisted of 35 doctors who prescribe such drugs. According to news sources, doctors who do prescribe opioids to their patients recommend that their usage is restricted to 90 days. Advocates of enhanced labeling argue that currently, prescription labels for these drugs do not indicate just how addictive they can be for some individuals. PROP (Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing) last summer petitioned for limiting of these high-power painkillers for non-related cancer pain which is chronic. It has been found that many non-cancer patients who have used opioids for the long-term have become severely addicted to the drugs. Even worse, many have overdosed on the drugs and even committed suicide. At Markem-Imaje, we know the importance of clear labeling and the impact that transparency may have on saving lives or perhaps preventing addiction to many drugs that are over-prescribed by physicians today. In this instance, perhaps if patients were aware of how addictive opioids really are, they would monitor their use more carefully. We are a leader in coding and marking systems for manufacturers around the world, providing labeling and printing solutions for those across a wide array of industries including pharmaceuticals, food, and electronics. Our industrial printing equipment and supplies are reliable and of the highest quality, so you can rely on indelible printing and less downtime for your production lines.
