Food Safety, Sustainability Offered In New Sappi Guard Papers

Sappi Limited, a global pulp and paper company headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, recently announced its launch of Guard M and Guard MS papers providing an integrated mineral oil and grease barrier in papers that not only provide improved product and food safety, but can be completely recycled as well.

According to reports the MOB (mineral oil barrier) works to prevent mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) from infiltrating packaged goods.  Sappi head of business development packaging and specialty papers Rene Kohler said the sustainable papers make additional laminations or special coatings unnecessary, while brand owners will be able to do away with fossil-based materials and can utilize cardboard or recycled paper for outer packaging.

Sappi Guard M and Sappi Guard MS are both available in two varieties including 'Nature' and 'Silk.'  'Nature' has a tactile, natural feel and is uncoated, while 'Silk' offers a silky, matte appearance and stands apart with elevated printing results.  Sappi Guard MS offers a mineral oil barrier like Guard M, but also eliminates extra production steps and materials used for sealing as it offers heat sealability as well.

Cereals, pasta, rice, powders and other foods that are dry or slightly oily are those that will benefit from the Guard portfolio of papers for primary or secondary packaging.  The Sappi Guard papers also support brand owners' sustainability efforts as all are supplied with PEFC or FSC certification upon request.

Sappi provides a wide array of innovative, functional paper-based packaging solutions including high barrier, sealable, mineral oil barrier, and grease resistant bag paper.  While reducing environmental impact, the company's functional papers are in response to market demand for flexible packaging alternatives to plastic and foils.
