CIJ Printing - Packaging Error Leads To Recall Of Birth Control Pills

Recently, four lots of birth control pills were recalled voluntarily by Apotex Corp. due to what federal health officials called a packaging error.  According to the FDA, the products involved in this recall include Drospirenone and Ethinyl Estradiol Tablets, USP.

The recall notice claimed the packaging on the tablets could include defective blisters with incorrect tablet arrangements that could result in women taking a placebo or not taking a tablet by mistake.  The packages may also contain empty blister pockets.  The birth control pills were shipped around the country to wholesalers and distributors.

NDC numbers on the tablets affected by the recall include 60505-4183-3 on outer cartons, and 60505-4183-1 on inner cartons.  Based in Weston, Florida, Apotex made arrangements with distributors and wholesalers who were affected to have the pills returned.

As of the time the recall was released, there had been no reports of adverse effects or pregnancies related to the tablets.  Consumers with tablets identified with the above NDC numbers were advised to consult with their healthcare providers or contact their pharmacy.
