Ball Corporation To Close Beverage Packaging Facility In San Martino

Colorado-based Ball Corporation recently announced that at the end of this year, it will close its San Martino, Italy beverage packaging plant.  This announcement follows the recent news that Ball opened a new specialty aluminum cans production facility in Guadalajara, Spain.

According to news reports, the San Martino facility employs about 70 individuals and began production of beverage cans in 1981.  The company said in a news release that it plans to support facility employees and close the plant in a way that is respectful and socially acceptable.

Customers the San Martino plant supplies have been assured they will continue being supplied by the company's other European production facilities.  As a result of the plant closure, Ball said it will begin converting a production line at its Nogara, Italy facility to sleek cans and expects the conversion to be complete within one year of the closure of the San Martino plant.

Ball Beverage Packaging Europe President Colin Gillis said that making the decision to close a plant is difficult, but the company's goal is to ensure long-term success of the company for 3,600 European employees and stakeholders.  Gillis said Ball must ensure that for the long-term the company will remain cost competitive in the Italian market environment.

Ball Corporation and its subsidiaries reported $11 billion in net sales for 2017, and employs over 17,000 people around the world as a leading supplier of packaging solutions that are sustainable and innovative for industries including household products, beverage and personal care.  The company has closed several facilities in recent years including a can-production plant in Germany and three beverage packing plants in California, Alabama and Texas.
