Sustainable Packaging - Is Edible Plastic A Real Thing?

In recent sustainable packaging news, Chelsea Briganti, co-founder and co-CEO of Loliware, introduced a new type of plastic that is said to be made of edible materials. The new plastic packaging, termed 'biodegredible' in place of biodegradable, is based on all-natural ingredients including sweeteners, flavors and colors derived from vegetables and fruits, organic ingredients, and a base for structure derived from seaweed gelatin (agar). According to a recent article at Packaging Digest, Loliware was initially designed for packaging of foodservice products, however Briganti believes the plastic, which can either be eaten within 60 days or left to degrade in the soil in the same time period, offers a taste sensation for other beverages and foods as well. Briganti and Leigh Ann Tucker created the line, which in 2014 consisted of edible, biodegradable drinking cups with the appearance of vintage glassware. Tucker said in an article at Entrepreneur that Loliware was born because as designers, she and Briganti wanted to be super-creative with a material and have fun while focusing on their larger vision of reducing the number of plastic cups that would end up in the landfill by providing an alternate solution. Today, the company has a website on which they sell cups designed to be used for a single occasion (such as to drink out of at a party), then eaten or thrown away. Who would have thought of plastics (all natural, of course) that are edible? At Markem-Imaje, we think it's an innovative invention that perhaps we'll see more of in the future. Markem-Imaje provides industrial coding and marking solutions for many industries, helping manufacturers reduce downtime on the production line, implement efficient recalls, and provide clear, indelible printing of ingredients lists, best-by dates, and more.
