Food Labeling - Activity-Equivalent Calorie Labels & Obsesity

It's well-known that a huge percentage of the world's population is overweight or obese. Recently in food labeling news, the Royal Society for Public Health in Britain published a policy paper revealing that the introduction of "activity-equivalent calorie labels" could help consumers know realistically how long it will take to burn off the calories they've consumed by eating a certain food. Most people who eat a half bag of chips, handful of cookies, or even macaroni and cheese have no idea how much walking or other exercise would be necessary to burn those calories off, and thereby maintain their weight. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), almost two billion people around the globe are overweight or obese. The British health agency feels that the need for these new labels exists, and that it would assist consumers when it comes to making healthier food choices. According to chief executive at the Royal Society for Public Health, Shirley Cramer, activity-equivalent calorie labeling would not only make food and drink choices of consumers more relatable to their everyday lives and activities, it would provide a subtle reminder of the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and active lifestyle. The labels show consumers how many minutes of swimming, bicycling, or running it would require to burn off the calories contained in the package the label is printed on. The organization believes the labels would be most effective in capturing the attention of consumers if placed on the front of packaging. This idea is very innovative, and will no doubt cause consumers to consider their choices before automatically tossing snacks and sugary soft drinks into their shopping carts!
