Cosmetic Packaging Breakthrough Announced By L'Oreal And Albea

Personal care company L'Oreal and packaging solutions company Albea recently announced a cosmetic packaging breakthrough with the first cosmetic tube that is carton-based.  According to reports, a bio-based, certified paper-like material will replace the majority of plastic in the cosmetic packaging.  A multi-criteria Life Cycle Analysis will assess the environmental benefits of the innovative new packaging.

L'Oreal VP of packaging and development Phillippe Thuvien said that the primary goal is to improve the environmental profile of all of the company's packaging by the end of 2020.  L'Oreal intends to launch sustainable, environmentally friendly packaging for skin care products during the second half of next year.

L'Oreal and Albea have signed the Ellen McArthur Foundation's New Plastics Economy Global Commitment in their collaboration for responsible packaging solutions.  Thuvien said the company has been consistently improving its packaging environmental footprint for a dozen years, since 2007.

The initial paper-based tube packaging may contain body or face care products, according to L'Oreal's website.  Albea VP of marketing, innovation and sustainability Gilles Swyngedauw said Albea's pledge to sustainability is reflected in the company's wide array of responsible packaging, and goes back 15 years.  Swyngedauw said Albea's goal at present is to speed the development of responsible, innovative solutions, to target breakthroughs.
