Pharma Supply Chain - Manufacturers Want Clearer Standards

In just over five months, pharmaceutical distributors and manufacturers will be required to have a comprehensive supply chain system in place, a system that makes it possible to track precisely where products are from manufacturing to reaching the distributor. These new guidelines have been established by the Drug Supply Chain Security Act, however pharmaceutical manufacturers are currently requesting that clearer standards be set forth for the changes that must be made. Apparently, some manufacturers in the pharmaceutical industry do not agree on all of the concepts the new FDA regulations outline, particularly those regarding electronic data interchange and efficient interoperability. In addition, there has been disagreement regarding which labels and data should be the focus by companies involved in various locations in the pharma supply chain. For instance, while wholesalers feel that packing slips simply slow the process of movement from manufacturer to distributor, some manufacturers still rely on this data which they consider critical in the process of moving goods. Pharmaceutical Technology, the source of this information, said that the Food and Drug Administration is working to provide guidance for standardization and compliance management for pharmaceutical companies that is clearer and more comprehensive, however manufacturers are still concerned that when it comes to actually implementing the new supply chain systems, the costs may be more than they can absorb. This is particularly true given the fact that many pharmaceutical companies have recently invested in new sterilization solutions. Still, the pharmaceutical industry as a whole is optimistic that the new supply chain regulations will ultimately result in enhanced profitability for the industry overall, and reduced instances of compromised or counterfeit drugs due to increased visibility in the pharma supply chain.
