ISA Symposium Focuses On Food And Pharma Automation

On March 14th & 15th, the third annual FPID (Food and Pharmaceutical Industries Division) symposium took place in Cork, Ireland, the first time the symposium was held outside the U.S. The ISA (International Society of Automation) focused this symposium on the challenges in food and pharma automation, including control of manufacturing costs, addressing the ever-increasing number of regulations, and handling/preparing for potential cyber security threats, among other topics. According to ISA's FPID Division Director, Andre Michel, companies in the pharma industry face unique challenges in automation, such as how to prevent contamination of bio products which could prove to be extremely costly for companies. Data integrity is another challenge in the industry as demands by the FDA and other agencies change. Michel also says other issues, such as serialization deadlines, are top concerns for pharma executives and plant managers. These deadlines often apply in eliminating counterfeit products from the supply chain and traceability. With technology moving at lightning fast speed, improvements in reliability and quality are top concerns for the FDA. In terms of the food industry, those who attended the symposium discussed, among other things, the application of digitalization to connect a food safety program for compliance and ROI. Ultimately, those who attended came out with a better understanding of issues that are considered urgent and must be addressed in the coming years, with many of the solutions centered on automation.
