Markem-Imaje Applauds California Nonprofit For Sustainable Packaging

At Markem-Imaje, we are constantly on the "cutting edge" of packaging, striving to reach solutions that meet the goals of our customers in terms of marking and coding systems that are environmentally friendly. Recently, a California-based nonprofit spearheaded a project that could potentially offer a sustainable alternative to the wax-lined cardboard boxes typically used to ship fruits and vegetables. Global Green USA, in conjunction with Lakeside Organic Gardens of Watsonville, shipped a load of iceberg lettuce to a customer using an alternative to paraffin-coated cardboard boxes, which are non-recyclable. Every year, there are tons of boxes containing fresh produce shipped all over the world, using wax coated boxes because of the cooling process required to keep fruits and vegetables fresh. Global Green USA is an organization that addresses global warming issues and strives to reduce waste. This "test run" using a sustainable alternative for lining cardboard boxes was performed to determine whether the alternative liner could withstand the ice and water process used in cooling produce. While still in the development stages, the new sustainable alternative looks promising. Store owners and officials vigorously support the use of sustainable materials that can be recycled, and say the cardboard boxes used to ship fresh produce are one of the biggest sources of waste for most grocery stores. Even though the types of produce that require wax-coated boxes only makes up about 5% of the total boxes used to ship food products, this equates to almost 1.5 million tons of wax-lined boxed being placed in landfills on an annual basis. We applaud all involved for their efforts in reducing waste! As a world-wide leading supplier of coding and marking systems for the food, pharmaceutical, electronic, personal care and beverage industries, Markem-Imaje is committed to minimizing our impact on the environment, reducing waste and extending product life cycles. Our continuing efforts to deliver exceptional quality industrial printing equipment that reduces the negative impact to our environment is a top priority, and one that will continue on into the future.
