Anti Counterfeiting - Websites Promoting Dangerous Drugs

Recently, the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has cracked down on more than 1,000 websites around the world promoting medicines and medical devices that are potentially dangerous, according to an article at Reuters. Some of the generic versions of prescription drugs that have been seized include Valium, Advair Diskus, Truvada, Meridia, and Nolvadex. The FDA said that warning letters had been sent to companies selling these medications and devices online, which includes more than 1,050 websites globally. Many of the illegal medical devices and drugs were screened and seized by inspectors with the Food & Drug Administration, and federal agencies at various main facilities in the U.S., including in New York, Chicago, and Miami. In regards to unapproved medical devices, several firms were sent warning letters, in addition to operators of almost 400 websites on the Internet. Some of the illegal medical devices being promoted include dermal fillers and products purported to be used for colon care. According to the FDA, counterfeit medicines and medical devices not only put consumers' health at risk, but customers are also vulnerable to identity theft, credit card fraud, and computer viruses. The efforts put forth by the FDA and federal agencies is part of an effort to combat the illegal selling and distribution of counterfeit medical products, led by INTERPOL during its IIWA (International Internet Week of Action). The FDA announced in a press release that efforts resulted in the seizure of 814 products which could have put American consumers' health and safety at risk. Some of the websites cracked down on during the 'Operation Pangea VIII' effort allegedly sold drugs which were promoted to consumers as generic versions of Valium and Truvada. The products seized by authorities were labeled as though they were FDA approved, although the FDA had not examined the products. At Markem-Imaje, we know the importance of effective labeling practices to ensure consumer safety in addition to helping guard against counterfeiting and diversion, and ensuring traceability.
