Multi-State Recall (90 Tons Of Food) Shows Importance Of Traceability

Recently, more than 180,000 pounds of sandwich wraps and ready-to-eat salads have been recalled due to their potential to be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7; 26 people across three states have become ill after contracting the bacteria. It is known that 15 of these individuals consumed products involved in the recall issued by Glass Onion Catering, a Richmond, California company. According to a news article at CNN.com, the products involved in the recall were shipped to distribution centers in several U.S. states including Arizona, California, Texas, Nevada, Oregon, New Mexico, Washington, and Utah. The salads and sandwich wraps involved in the recall have "P-34221" inside the USDA inspection mark and were manufactured between September 23 and November 6. The catering company allegedly supplies its food products to Super Fresh Foods, Delish, Trader Joe's, and other retailers. Shortly after the recall, Whole Foods Market recalled two of its salads in stores in the northern California region in response to the Glass Onion cases. This story demonstrates how critical it is that manufacturers are able to rapidly trace a tainted product's source. By having the ability to quickly determine when/where a food product was manufactured and packaged, the potential health risks and possible damage to a company's brand image can be reduced. Companies must also provide crucial identifying data regarding foods that have been recalled as well, so that any consumers who may have purchased a product can easily determine whether they may be at risk of contracting E. coli or other dangerous foodborne bacteria.
