Food Safety And Traceability - Top Concern For Consumers And Regulators

Today's consumers are becoming increasingly concerned with the safety and sourcing of the foods they eat. In addition, regulators are requiring that manufacturers provide highly detailed data regarding every aspect of the foods they produce throughout every step of the process. According to Michelle Southall, Director of Implementation Support at GS1, food safety and traceability has become even more of a focus due to numerous high-profile outbreaks and food safety regulations that have been ramped up over the past months. According to Southall, "There have been many outbreaks of foodborne illness - peanut butter, peppers, spinach, tomatoes, etc. - that have raised serious questions about the FDA's ability to protect the nation's food supply. As a result, the FDA oversight of food, drugs, and medical devices has become a top priority." Southall used one rather alarming example of the lack of information provided in traceability, saying that a recent report released by the HHS (U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services) indicated within their traceability study, only five of 40 food products could have each of the separate ingredients traced back to their origins through the supply chain. Food manufacturers used in the study failed to label packaging correctly with lot information, some did not even maintain records regarding specific lots. Even more shocking is the fact that several facilities who participated in the study were not even aware of traceability requirements. Thankfully, regulations such as the FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) have recently been written into law which will help improve traceability, and the safety of the foods consumers purchase. At Markem-Imaje, we know the importance of traceability not only in regards to consumers who want to know where the foods they eat come from, but in implementing effective recalls as well. We provide industrial traceability solutions to food manufacturers around the world, and are a trusted leader in coding and marking systems for manufacturers in a wide array of industries.
