Laser Marking - Reducing Food Waste A Priority For Unilever

Hellmann's and Knorr are two Unilever food brands that will soon carry the "often good after" text in its products' labeling in an effort to cut down on waste reduction.  According to reports, the phrase is Danish and will help consumers better understand the shelf life of many food products, which is often long with Knorr products as they are dry and naturally preserved.

Arla, Carlsberg, Orkla Foods and Unilever Denmark participated in developing the concept "often good after" with Too Good to Go, a food waste reduction app.  The text will be found on several Knorr rice noodle mini meals in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden when they are launched this fall.

Unilever Managing Director Bjarne Steen Jensen said it is important for the company to ensure that foods are eaten and not wasted.  Jensen said, "At Unilever, we are working on sustainability and food waste reduction.  In 2019 and 2020, we will gradually implement the 'often good after' text as a guide for consumers on selected food packaging."

A spokesperson for Unilever said the company wants to ensure customers smell, look at, or taste food products before tossing them.  Unilever wants to reduce food waste by making sure consumers eat more of the foods that are still good.  Food labeling remains confusing for many consumers who aren't certain what "best by," "best before," and other date information actually means.

Companies are trying to encourage consumers to use their senses of smell, sight, and taste in determining whether foods are safe to eat.  One of these companies is Thise Dairy, who rolled out an educational guide on all of its milk cartons to do just that.  Other companies who are using the 'often good after' text in labeling include Coop, Letz Sushi, Logismose Meyers, Mikkeller, TeeDawn, Toms Group and Urtekram.

Reports say that in Europe, as much as 10% of total food waste is linked to date labeling confusion.  Food waste is a concern all around the world today, and contributes to CO2 emissions.
