Traceability - Did The Polar Vortex Impact Your Supply Chain?

This has been one of the wildest (and most disruptive) winters in the U.S. in years, given all of the snow/ice storms. The Central and Eastern sections of the U.S. suffered substantially through the polar vortex, which brought not only record-low temperatures, but snow, ice, sleet, and freezing rain to many states. How did your company's supply chain fare through all of the mess? According to senior vice-president at Planalytics, Evan Gold, the national economy suffered a $5 billion impact due to what was termed the 'polar vortex.' Of course this wasn't the only winter storm the U.S. has experienced this winter. Combine them all, and the weather has wreaked havoc, causing massive travel delays and power outages. What most people don’t realize; however, is that companies have suffered delayed cargo shipments, downtime due to employees not being able to make it in to work, and more. For business, winter storms have no doubt resulted in disruptions in both shipping and supply chains. Companies should have a continuity plan in place for rare events, such as unprecedented winter storms. Government regulations and industry standards leave many manufacturers facing a dilemma when it comes to labeling; products cannot be delivered if they lack the appropriate labels. Three key areas of focus to ensure continuity include visibility, centralization, and standardization. The risk of not having the proper labels during the winter, and other periods of disruption, can be mitigated by implementing consistent labeling processes across your organization should one facility experience issues with labeling. In addition, all facilities within your enterprise should have this critical data available so that operations can proceed even when a major disruption occurs. Most critical of all is knowing where in your supply chain the biggest risks exists. Be sure that special attention is paid to examining and scrutinizing what may be your company's single points of failure. When your manufacturing or shipping processes are disrupted, it can result in customer dissatisfaction - regardless of the reason.
