CIJ Printers - New Cardboard Carriers To Replace Plastic In Europe

In 2020, consumers in Europe will notice a change in packaging as Coca-Cola and Budweiser roll out cardboard carriers that will replace the plastic six-pack ring.  Coke and AB InBev are switching to the KeelClip in efforts to reduce plastic.

The KeelClip was designed by Graphic Packaging International and includes a flap shaped similar to the keel of a boat to attach a paper lid to the top of cans for stability.  Not only does it reduce plastic waste, the cardboard carriers allow for additional marketing space for brands and are easily integrated into existing production lines.

While the KeelClip is slightly more costly than plastic, the cost will lower as production ramps up according to Bret Arnone, VP of beverage commercial operations at Graphic Packaging.

In 2021 single-use plastic will be banned in the European Union and other countries have announced similar bans, including Canada.  Although the United States has not banned single-use plastic, consumers are becoming increasingly interested in alternatives to plastic.  In addition to Budweiser, AB InBev will use the KeelClip cardboard carriers on Stella Artois and other products in the UK.

Coca-Cola said of the KeelClip, "This new type of packaging not only replaces the plastic wrap, but also minimizes the amount of paper and card required."  Early next year the company will start rolling out the new can multipacks in Poland and Ireland, along with Italy, Austria, Romania and Switzerland.  Coca-Cola will invest $16.6 million in the new packaging and said the change will save 3,000 tons of CO2 and 2,000 tons of plastic annually.
