Packaging News - Think Organic Products Contain No GMOs?

While some products labeled '100% Organic' truly are, recent news indicates that many may not be, and may contain GMOs, or genetically modified organisms. A recent packaging news article from The Epoch Times suggests that in the U.S., organic labeling regulations under the USDA do not require that GMO ingredients in foods claiming to be organic are included on the labels of those foods. One example of this is non-organic corn starch used in some organic foods. In the U.S., most of the corn grown is a GMO product; in other words, it contains genetically modified organisms. However, this corn starch can be used in foods that claim to be 100% organic, without this fact being stated in the labeling. U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations allow for ingredients in organic products to be 5% or less non-organic when those ingredients are not available commercially in organic form. The Organic and Non-GMO Report, a GMO watch group, notes that the USDA has approved more than 50 substances that are non-organic for use in food products labeled 100% organic. According to the watch group, foods that are certified organic may contain as much as 30% ingredients that are non-organic or GMOs. Consumer trust is essential today for food manufacturers and brands, however it is clear that with many "organic" foods, transparency is lacking. Many feel the problem is the lack of labeling requirements by the USDA, who perhaps should enforce stricter guidelines and increase track and trace standards when it comes to organic foods, and the labels consumers trust to inform/educate them to what is actually in the foods they are buying. When it comes to today's consumers, full disclosure is essential. At Markem-Imaje, we are fully aware that today's consumers are all about transparency when it comes to the foods they eat. As trusted leaders in the industrial printing industry, providing coding and marking solutions for all types of packaging across many industries, we invite manufacturers to learn more about our products, and the ability to reduce diversion or counterfeiting while enhancing traceability.
