Detergent Pods - New Labeling Safety Standard Announced

According to a recent article at Packaging World, a new labeling safety standard relevant to the packaging of liquid laundry detergent packets (pods) was slated for final approval on September 15. Recently, concern has been growing about the potential dangers of detergent pods for children who may think the pods are toys or candy, and accidentally ingest them. This has resulted in coughing and choking in young children, as well as loss of consciousness and respiratory distress in some cases. Additionally, contact of the pods with the eyes can result in irritation and burns of the cornea. ASTM International President, James A. Thomas, says the standard (F3159-15, Consumer Safety Specification for Liquid Laundry Packets) is a great example of how government, industry, consumer groups, and others can work together when it comes to consumers' health and safety, creating a stronger culture. The goal of the standard is to lessen the risks of children ingesting the product. Under the new standard, laundry detergent packets will be contained in packaging that masks the visibility of the packet, such as opaque packaging. Warning statement labels will also be included on detergent pod products, which will be manufactured in a way that makes opening them difficult for children. Millions of consumers use liquid laundry detergent packets safely, however according to ACI Executive Vice President for Technical & International Affairs, Richard Sedlak, manufacturers of these products are highly committed to reducing accidents related to detergent pods among children. ACI (American Cleaning Institute) has worked closely with ASTM technical activities for decades, and according to Sedlak, the company's commitment to consumer safety is unwavering. At Markem-Imaje, we know the role packaging and labeling play in the safety of products for consumers. The implementation of the new standard will hopefully result in improved safety and a substantial reduction in the number of accidents with detergent pods among children.
