Can And Bottle Printing - Guinness Opens U.S. Brewery In Maryland

Established more than 250 years ago in Ireland, Guinness has opened a brewery near Baltimore, Maryland after investing about $90 million in the facility which includes a restaurant, tap room and visitor center according to news reports.

Known for its dark stout, Guinness says the new U.S. brewery will not produce stouts but instead will focus on lager beers.  The Maryland facility will create new beers for the U.S. market and be the home of Guinness Blonde, housing two custom-built brew houses.  One of the houses has a 10-barrel capacity and is slated for small-batch experimental brews, while the other is a 100-hectoliter system where Guinness Blonde will be brewed for distribution across the nation.

The facility is expected to generate about 200 jobs in the Baltimore area.  According to Guinness brand owner Diageo Beer, having a brewery in the U.S. helps the company get smaller batches to market quicker while making it possible to understand emerging trends and respond to those trends faster.  Diageo said Guinness desires to be closer to the action, considering the U.S. is the most exciting, dynamic market in the beer industry in the world at the current time.

Guinness's new brewery, the Open Gate Brewery and Barrel House, is located approximately 10 miles from Baltimore in Relay, MD.  News reports say more than 15 beers will generally be on tap, and visitors can enjoy self-guided tours at no cost.  The new brewery opened on August 3rd and intends to offer guided tours with beer tastings later in the summer for $10.
