Pharmaceutical Coding - Packaging Defect And Birth Control Pills Recall

Janssen Pharmaceuticals recently recalled specific lots of ORTHO-NOVUM birth control pills due to incorrect instructions in packaging that could result in unintended pregnancy or bleeding if patients take the pills in the wrong order.

According to reports, the products affected include the ORTHO-NOVUM r 1/35 with lot number 18BM114, and ORTHO-NOVUM r 7/7/7 with lot numbers 18CM120 and 18BM110.  Expiration dates on all three lots is March 2020.  The FDA said the pills are effective and safe for women to take, if the pills were dispensed in the proper order with correct instructions.  Essentially, women could possibly take a "reminder" pill rather than the active pill containing hormones they meant to take given the incorrect instructions with packaging.  This could result in bleeding or accidental pregnancy.

The correct instructions for the pills can be found on Janssen's website.  Consumers who have questions or concerns can also contact the company at 1-800-526-7736.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. voluntarily issued the recall of the birth control pills which were distributed to pharmacies, distributors and wholesalers in the U.S.  All parties have been instructed to return the defective products via a recall letter.
