Industrial Coding - Plastic Produce Packaging Okay With Majority

A recent survey found that a vast number of consumers aren't too concerned about purchasing produce in plastic packaging.  According to the results of the survey, conducted among 1,000 consumers in the U.S. by consulting firm Category Partners, 72% don't mind (or even prefer to) purchase produce in plastic packaging.

It seems that income is a factor in whether consumers purchase produce in plastic packaging as well.  Category Partners found in conducting the survey that the greater the income level, the more avoidance of plastic packaging.  This seemed to pertain to those making $150,000 per year or more.  Of consumers with an income of $150,000 or more, approximately a quarter would not buy bakery items packaged in plastic, while about a third would not buy produce in plastic packaging.

Age was a factor as well, as the firm found consumers 65 years old or older were most likely to avoid produce, deli, or bakery items packaged in plastic.  Those who preferred plastic packaging for produce most were younger shoppers.

In all, the survey revealed that 36% of those surveyed did not care if produce was in plastic packaging.  Nearly a fifth of respondents admitted they preferred plastic packaging for fresh produce.  Only 17% of respondents would avoid purchasing produce packaged in plastic.

Cara Ammon, Category Partners director of research said that many shoppers like the move toward plastic for reasons such as food safety, convenience, and value.  Ammon said in a release, "As retailers push more and more toward plastic packaging in the fresh departments, many consumers are on board."  She also said it is still important to give consumers options, as some prefer other materials or bulk packaging.
