Beer Coding: Craft Bewers Join To Create Single Malt Whiskey

In a craft brewing industry where the focus is generally on crafting distinct beer flavors, is it such a stretch to think some of these brewers would dip their toes into spirits as well?  Maybe it's a surprise to some, but a few craft breweries have had spirits divisions for some time now, including Dogfish Head.  Now, Atlanta's Monday Night Brewing and ASW Distillery are teaming up to create a smoky, Scottish-style single malt whiskey according to news reports.

Adam Bishop, brewmaster at Monday Night, collaborated with head distiller at ASW Justin Manglitz in coming up with the idea of creating a smoky whiskey, and Bishop is reportedly a Scotch whiskey aficionado. Bishop said in news reports that he wanted to show off the cherrywood-smoked malt used in creating Monday Night's Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale beer and play on it in a barrel-aged whiskey.

Monday Night Brewing and ASW Distillery are located about five miles apart, and Bishop laughingly said that partnering with the distillery was essential since he didn't have a still.  While the logistics of transforming a mash into a whiskey were a bit challenging, the results were ultimately perfect according to the brewmaster, who said the Scotch-style whiskey offers subtle hints of smoke, oak, and vanilla notes, a taste that's a tad sweet with wood sugar as it lingers into a cherrywood smoke offering subtle vanilla and caramel characteristics.

The whiskey is scheduled to be released in early March in beverage stores in the Atlanta area, with a limited release party scheduled at the ASW Distillery on February 27.
