Numerous Companies Issue Recalls For Products Containing Gill's Onions

Gill's Onions, a supplier of onions to various companies for further processing, recalled their diced onions on July 18th because of the potential for Listeria monocytogenes. Since that time, at least 14 companies have recalled products made with the onions supplied by Gill's. Most recently, the onion producer supplied onions to Fresh Point in Atlanta, GA. A Marlborough, Massachusetts company, Ken's Foods, has just issued a recall on various products including coleslaw, barbecue sauce and tartar sauce because the products contain the recalled diced onions manufactured by Gill's. The onions in the products were purchased from Fresh Point. Some of the brand names on the recalled products include Ken's, Dickey's, Golden Corral, Lee's and Fatz. These products were shipped to several states across the U.S. including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin. The sauces and coleslaw were distributed to brokers, private label customers and distribution centers in these states. At Markem-Imaje, we know how critical it is to have a reliable traceability system in place. Given the wide scope of this recall, and the fact that it affected so many companies, it could be devastating for Gill's Onions not only in terms of consumer trust, but financially as well. Other companies which have issued recalls in the past two weeks for products containing Gill's Onions include Garden Fresh Foods, Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC, Spartan Stores, Inc., LSG Sky Chefs, Huxtable's Kitchen and Publix Super Markets. These recalled products include bean and dip products, salsa, ready-to-eat salads, bean salads, broccoli stir fry, ready-to-eat chipotle chicken wraps, barbecue chicken salad and sub sandwiches. This list is not all-inclusive, there are several other companies who have recalled products containing Gill's Onions as well. Will these companies continue to purchase diced yellow and white onions from Gill's? It remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that widespread recalls such as this have a negative impact on a company's brand and trustworthiness.
