Marking Systems - Labeling Error Recall Of Hy-Vee Meat Products

Recently, a recall was issued for approximately 6,200 pounds of Hy-Vee meat products because of a mistake in labeling.  According to reports, seven of Hy-Vee's ready-to-eat beef and chicken Mealtime Asian Entrees were voluntarily recalled after it was discovered milk was not declared on the food products' labels.

Fried rice is in the ready-to-eat products, and made using liquid eggs containing milk.  The USDA's FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service) said the seven Mealtime Asian Entrees were recalled due to "misbranding and undeclared allergens."  As of September 10 there had been no reported issues related to eating the Hy-Vee products which included 20 oz. packages of Hy-Vee mealtime Mongolian-style beef, Beef with Broccoli, Cashew Chicken, Sweet Orange Chicken, General Chicken, and Sesame Chicken, all with lot code 19250 and 19251 with "Best if Used By" dates of September 14 and September 15.

Milk is a known allergen, and the products were distributed to retail stores in Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and South Dakota.  The inside of the USDA mark of inspection on the affected products contains establishment numbers of "P-51558" or "EST. 51558."

The most common allergens include milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish (crab, lobster, shrimp), tree nuts, soybean, wheat, and peanuts.  Consumers should carefully read "ingredients" and "contains" in addition to calorie count, protein, carbs and other information as food labels can be confusing and difficult to understand.  Technical terms are sometimes used for common food allergens, such as "sodium caseinate" which is casein, a milk protein.
