Marking And Coding - The Barcode Celebrates 40 Years

Many of you likely cannot even remember a world without barcodes, considering the first product with a barcode was scanned in an Ohio supermarket 40 years ago - Wrigley's chewing gum! This was the first time in our country's history that information about consumer goods could be captured electronically by the grocery industry. What would we do today if barcodes hadn't been invented? Hard to imagine. Barcodes work hard to accomplish several things. Not only do they capture and identify information about the particular product they are on, they are also important for companies in terms of enhancing food safety operations and implementing traceability programs. Since the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011, the need for better traceability has only grown more critical. The Food Safety Modernization Act has made it possible for the U.S. FDA to mandate recalls and establish a tracing system for food products. Since the launch of the Foodservice GS1 US Standards Initiative in 2009, many of the largest and most well-known manufacturers and distributors have adopted GS1 Standards, placing barcodes on the products they manufacture using GLNs (Global Location Numbers) and GTINs (Global Trade Item Numbers) to not only identify those products, but specify location of those products within the supply chain. While barcodes are essential for providing information and tracing where products may be throughout the supply chain, they also assist distributors with the shipping and receiving processes. Today, those manufacturers who utilize GS1-128 barcodes make it possible for distributors and operators to quickly determine where products originated, making for efficient recalls and management of inventory. Considering all the barcode does, where would we be without it today? A frightening thought, really. At Markem-Imaje, we provide industrial printing equipment for manufacturers of food, pharmaceuticals, beverages, dairy, electronics, personal care goods, and more. Whether you're in need of traceability or marking and coding systems, we provide cost-effective, quality solutions to manufacturers around the world.
