Industrial Coding Solutions - FSA Opts For Stringent Ingredient And Allergen Information Labeling

Recently it was announced that the Food Standards Agency (FSA) headquartered in London will back mandatory full ingredient labeling on foods that are pre-packaged for direct sale.  This move is in response to a growing need for allergens to be clearly indicated on packaging of foods and involves 14 specific allergens, according to reports.

The 14 major food allergens in Europe include eggs, mustard, fish, celery, milk, crustaceans, peanuts, soya, sesame, sulphites, molluscs, lupin, tree nuts and cereals containing gluten.  Labeling will include not only the name of the food, but a complete list of ingredients with any allergens emphasized so that they clearly stand out to consumers who may have allergies to these ingredients.

Navitas Group, formed to help businesses meet health and safety requirements, welcomed the FSA's ruling on full ingredient labeling for PPDS foods and claimed it would cost foodservice operators less than a cup of coffee each day to be compliant.  Navitas Group CEO Ben Gardner said, "Of course foodservice businesses may be concerned about the cost of complying with full ingredient labeling."  He went on to say that even for smaller foodservice operators, the costs of allergen labeling and food safety isn't prohibitive.  Ultimately, the expense of full ingredient labeling is worth it for consumers who have food allergies to feel reassured and have peace of mind with the foods they buy.

Allergy Consultant Nathalie Newman said that food labeling is critical to eating safely for those who live with allergies.  Newman has been working with Navitas, and said that, "Open and honest communication and sharing of all ingredients used enables the consumer to make an informed decision as to whether something is safe for them or not."

Navitas Group offers consulting, online training courses, food safety and compliance monitoring for foodservice operators and has worked with many clients including Caterlink, Radish, Brucciani, Benugo, Kellaways Fish & Chips, Millers Fish & Chips and more.
