Packaging And Ingredients Updates Make Applegate's Meat Even Better

Applegate, a New Jersey-based company focusing on high-quality organic and natural deli meats, hot dogs, cheese, sausages, frozen and other products and a stand-alone subsidiary of Hormel Foods, recently announced it would remove carrageenan, an extract of seaweed, from its poultry deli meat varieties.  The USDA recently reversed its decision to ban the controversial ingredient, however Applegate has decided to move forward in its Changing The Meat We Eat® mission.

News reports say Applegate, the nation's leading brand in natural and organic meat, will also update packaging on their deli ham products in an effort to deliver on consumers' desires.  Consumers can expect improved taste and a more natural shape in the deli ham slow-cooked varieties that were once rectangular, with the changes coming this fall.  All of the products will undergo a packaging design change following feedback from consumers regarding the current packaging and their difficulty in opening deli meat.  According to Applegate VP of marketing Nicole Glenn, the new packaging design will offer easy opening with a peal and reseal tab, while at the same time using less plastic.

Glenn said Applegate is a brand that takes action on the feedback of consumers, and while the USDA overruled the National Organic Standards Board's recommendation to remove carrageenan from the list of approved ingredients by years' end, the company would remove it from natural and organic poultry deli meats regardless.  Applegate also strictly sources meats containing no antibiotics, something they've been doing since long before it became a topic of debate.
