Convenience Needs Solved With Kingsford Ready Meal Ribs Packaging

Packaging for pre-cooked ribs in recent years hasn't exactly been ideal, considering the mess upon removing the ribs from a plastic film bag - that is, until Carl Buddig & Co.'s CBQ subsidiary obtained a contract to produce pre-cooked ribs and other barbecue entrees under the Kingsford brand.

A couple of years ago meat packer and processor Rupari made it their goal to find a solution that worked to minimize the mess of handling BBQ products such as the Tony Roma brand, while increasing shelf life for preservative-free recipes.  At the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association show, Rupari teamed up with Advanta representatives to work on a solution to the problem.  Advanta is a U.K. based company providing packaging solutions including foil containers and other food packaging products around the world.

When the two companies partnered in an effort to find a solution, they decided on foil-based packaging in the form of aluminum trays with a custom fit combined with vacuum sealing.  This solution would eliminate messy plastic packaging while making it possible to place the product directly on the grill or into the oven without having to put the ribs in another container for cooking.

This new packaging debuted under the Tony Roma label a couple of years ago, and in the summer of 2017 Rupari was acquired by Carl Buddig.  This year, the Kingsford brand was introduced by CBQ featuring a redesigned outer carton along with the innovative aluminum tray packaging.

According to Advanta general manager Charlie Ahern, the new aluminum tray packaging increases shelf life of the product to just over 3 1/2 months.  The Kingsford product quickly expanded across various markets in America with a price tag of $13.99.  Customer feedback has been positive as most consumers appreciate the convenience and dramatically reduced mess.
