Barcodes And Smartphones, A Match Made In 'Shopping Heaven'

While the trusty old barcode has been around for what seems like forever, they still continue to play an essential role in shopping today - particularly given the popularity of smartphones, and the fact that nearly everyone has these handy little mobile devices. For shoppers, it seems that barcodes and smartphones are a match made in heaven as more and more consumers are using their mobile devices to learn more about the products they consider purchasing. By scanning the barcode of a product, the shopper not only learns about the product, but in some cases there are applications that make it possible for the consumer to browse the web for the product to learn if there may be a better deal online. Known as "showrooming," consumers can now learn more about the products they're interested in and even comparison shop while standing in the store! Some retailers have feared that their brick-and-mortar retail stores were in danger of becoming extinct given today's mobile technology and the popularity of the Internet, however a recent Gallup poll showed that this is not the case. Of those who were surveyed, 59% said their shopping habits had not changed, while 19% admitted they do shop online more now than at retail stores. However, a full 22% said that they now shop more at retail stores in person than they did before. Some of the uptick in shopping in person can be attributed to retailers communicating with customers via social media and electronic communications. It looks as though the humble barcode is playing a more important role than ever before in retail shopping. At Markem-Imaje, we know the importance of accurate labels and barcodes. Manufacturers in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, electronic, postal, and personal care industries can trust us for cost-effective solutions to all of your coding and marking needs.
