New Buycott App Makes It Possible For Customers To Learn From Barcodes

Businesses have known for a while now that transparency in barcodes is becoming more and more important, and that maintaining label compliance is essential for companies involved in the production or manufacturing of many consumer goods, particularly foods. Now, a new app named Buycott will make it possible for consumers to learn more about the origin of a product, its ingredients, even who the corporate parent company is. Created by Ivan Pardo, a 26-year-old freelance programmer living in Los Angeles, the Buycott app is now available for download at Google Play and iTunes, according to a recent article on Forbes.com. The article claims that a consumer can scan a box of Splenda sweetener using the app on his or her iPhone or Android, and see that its parent company, McNeil Nutritionals, is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. The new app also makes it possible for the user to boycott business practices that violate particular principles such as opposing mandatory labeling of foods that are genetically modified, rather than boycotting individual companies. These campaigns, based on various business practices and principles of the users, are user-generated. While it isn't fine-tuned as of yet, the developers are asking for the assistance of consumers when shopping to help develop the backend further. Shoppers are asked to input names of products that are not recognized by the app when those products are scanned. Overall, Pardo's objective is to empower consumers with the ability to make well-informed purchasing decisions using a platform that is readily available to most shoppers today - a smartphone.
