Food Labeling - Claims Consumers Often Fall Prey To

Consumers have become extremely label savvy today in an effort to eat healthier and avoid foods with preservatives, allergens, fillers, and other ingredients they may not even recognize. According to a recent food labeling article at Everyday Health, there are three marketing tricks many companies use to give their processed foods a healthier image. Are you a manufacturer who makes one or more of these claims? Fiber. Everyone knows fiber is healthy, but adding it to other ingredients such as refined white flour, sugar, and cream cheese doesn't necessarily make for a healthy snack. Many foods that claim to have more fiber, but that may not be any more nutritious (or even healthy), include cereals, energy bars, muffins, even cookies. Protein. We all know protein is good for us, and those who diet know it gives them more energy. Some of the foods that make protein health claims include cereals, snacks, and other packaged foods. Companies often incorporate rice, pea, or soy protein powders, but this doesn’t always equate to better nutrition - especially when a food with higher protein also has an incredible amount of added sugar! Vitamin-fortified. "Good source of vitamin C," "fortified with vitamin C," these are claims consumers often see on fruit drinks, gummy snacks, and even lollipops, but what's the real story? Most of these fruit-flavored drinks and packaged foods contain vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid, not vitamins derived from actual fruit. Many of these foods and beverages are packed with sugar, so just how healthy is it? This is why transparency in food labeling is so important. While some consumers have yet to start scrutinizing the nutrition facts panel and ingredients list, many have begun this practice. Manufacturers should consider the claims they make, and be aware that consumers are becoming more aware every day of the marketing "tricks" often used to deceive them!
