Could 'KnowBagz' Meet an Unmet Need in Flexible Packaging

In December of last year, Patrick Tatom, described as an "inventive kind of guy," filed for a patent on a product he named "KnowBagz" which are customizable packaging bags according to a recent article at Packaging Digest. According to Tatom, these packaging bags can be cut into various sizes in order to meet the needs of the customer, and help the user easily determine the weight of the bag no matter what its size. Having presented his product to S.C. Johnson for the right of first refusal, Tatom pulled his offer earlier this month. He feels that many manufacturers of flexible or plastic packaging would benefit from these unique bags, and they would love the ability to be the only manufacturer who would be able to print the actual weight of the bag directly on the plastic bag. The idea was sparked when Tatom was looking for weight-marked vacuum-sealed bags in Walmart to distribute tea that he sells to friends and family. Because the "KnowBagz" would be marked with the weight of the bag, consumers would know exactly how much the contents inside weigh. Ultimately, the weight of the content inside the bag could be verified, so that consumers know the weight of the plastic bag or other packaging was not included in the weight. According to Tatum, more companies are trending toward vacuum bags, which weigh about 7 to 10 grams. He maintains that manufacturers can easily pre-mark the bags by using marking equipment that's readily available, and formulas for bag weights they already have. At this point, the markings would read by consumers, however it is possible for the markings to be read electronically in the future, making them machine readable. Tatum is currently involved in the ancillary marijuana industry, however he feels that there is no limit to the possibilities of this highly functional idea when it comes to ancillary products. Consumers and manufacturers would likely find the KnowBagz useful for tea, coffee, or nearly any product packaged in vacuum bags or other flexible packaging. By subtracting the weight of the bag, consumers would know the exact weight of the contents inside. At Markem-Imaje we know packaging has become a big issue for consumers who desire packaging that's lightweight, convenient, easy to open, even simple to use when on-the-go.
