80% of Certain Products Will Have QR Codes within Five Years

Recently, an article at Food Navigator claimed that within five years, about 80% of specific industries would offer products to consumers featuring a QR code or SmartLabel shoppers can scan using various devices such as smartphones to access substantial information about these products. Industries include personal care products, foods, beverages, and household and pet care products. Products in the U.S. currently provide consumers with information regarding allergens, nutrition information, and ingredients. The new 'SmartLabels' would go further, making it possible for consumers to access health claims, information regarding sustainability, animal welfare info, whether the product is manufactured using GMO's, storage information, and more according to reports. The Grocery Manufacturers Association has predicted that by the end of 2017, about 30,000 products will be included in the scheme. Consumers will be capable of accessing data by doing a web search via Google or other search engines, through the company's website, by scanning package QR codes, and perhaps through apps at some point. Hershey, the first company to test the new technology, said that transparency is taken to a whole new level using SmartLabels, fulfilling consumers' desire to "know more about their food, such as where it came from and what went into making it." The SmartLabel technology isn't agreeable to everyone, including activists who maintain there is no substitute for package labels containing clear, concise wording in regards to GMO's. One group, Just Label It, conducted a poll of 800 people and found that of those, only 8% preferred scannable barcodes rather than GMO labeling on the package. According to the article, only 16% to 17% had ever scanned a QR or bar code to access information. What is the takeaway here? Consumers may have an increased sense of confidence in products knowing all of the additional information is available via QR codes if or when they do want to access it.
