Wine Packaging - Making Wine Stand Out To Consumers

Today, consumers find all types of wine on the supermarket shelves, not just in liquor stores.  Because of the competitiveness, it's necessary for wine makers to make their products stand out to the consumer, just as other retail products find ways to differentiate themselves.  With the growing popularity of craft beers and some spirits, growth in the consumption of wine around the globe is somewhat challenged, according to the AWA Global Wine Label Awareness Report 2016.

The newly-published report reveals the market for wine labels across all formats - glass bottle, carton, pouch, bag-in-box - is forecast to grow by 2% between now and 2018.  For manufacturers, it is critical to make their brand speak - and the wine label is the primary contributor to a product that stands out and is highly visible on the shelf.

While Europe is by far the biggest producer of wine around the world at 62%, the U.S. comes in third after South America at 8%.  According to the special report, wine producers in the three regions continue to choose traditional paper substrates for wine labeling over film substrates.  More than 60% of wine labels are pressure-sensitive labels, which continue to gain traction over glue-applied labels.

AWA forecasts that from now through 2018, pressure-sensitive labels will grow at 2.8% per year.  While traditional glue-applied labels will grow fractionally, pressure-sensitive labels dominate largely due to the variety of technologies for printing/converting, sophistication, and for their efficiency in automatic application.
