Top Trends in Personal Care and Cosmetics Packaging

Recently, an article at Cosmetics Design covered top trends in personal care and beauty industry packaging according to Leslie Sherr, co-author of the forthcoming book Material Innovation: Packaging. Today, packaging is one of the most important elements in making a great first impression on consumers, as well as a lasting impression. After all, the packaging is the first thing a consumer sees. So, what are some of the trends in personal care and cosmetics packaging design that impact today's consumers? According to Sherr, overarching trends include packaging that is inspired by science or by ancient natural practices, sleek and minimal, organic and handcrafted, fitness, and ageless beauty. Packaging is used by many luxury skin care brands to communicate not only brand values and trends, but how those who purchase these products should use individual products in a line. Many skincare brands today are packaged as a system, requiring companies who manufacture luxury skin care products to educate consumers regarding how these products should be applied and how they can expect them to perform. Many beauty care products today are packaged using designs Sherr refers to as 'dermatology-chic,' that is packaging that is light and simple in appearance using white-to-silver color palettes and glossy surfaces. This type of packaging emphasizes efficacy and purity to consumers, two factors important in skincare today. When it comes to beauty and personal care product packaging, Sherr contends that less is more. In designing packaging, luxury brands should consider that trends do not last, but classic design does. Packaging should express the brand's core values, and be designed in a way that doesn't become dated before its time, while using materials that reflect the activities and ideas brands represent.
