Studies Reveal Desire For Flexible Packaging Over Rigid

FPA, or the Flexible Packaging Association, has conducted a couple of new studies over the past two years regarding the transition to flexible packaging from more rigid options and its popularity among both brand owners and consumers.

Today, countless consumer goods including cosmetics, fresh produce, wine, and other products have made the switch to flexible packaging.  In their 2015 Brand Value Study, FPA found that flexible packaging is more suitable for today's contemporary consumer lifestyle, and that most consumers will pay more for flexible packaging and its ability to enhance the product attributes.  Some of the key features consumers enjoy with flexible packaging include:

  • Packaging that is easier to open
  • The ability to reseal
  • Easier storage
  • Reusability

The study found that, when compared to rigid or non-flexible packaging, 79% of Americans feel storing foods in flexible packaging has benefits.  In identical items packaged in flexible and non-flexible packaging, 71% would choose the flexible packaging.

Some of the key takeaways in the 2016 Flexible Packaging Transition Advantages Study among brand owners included those relative to meeting consumer demands and operational benefits.  Many brand owners are using a mix of rigid and flexible packaging, with some of the benefits cited including:

  • Ability to meet convenience and other consumer needs
  • Efficiency in terms of shipping and transportation
  • Reduced production costs
  • Adherance to changing consumer lifestyle trends

Not surprisingly, 55% of brand owners who increased the use of flexible packaging in their products experienced an improvement in sales.  Of those who have already begun using a higher mix of flexible packaging, 58% revealed they intend to increase usage of flexible even more in the future.

While studies are generally conducted among a small segment of the population, there is certainly no denying that flexible packaging is a growing and extremely popular trend among both brand owners and consumers.
