Date Coders - What All Those Best-by, Sell-by and Other Codes Mean

For consumers, it can sometimes be confusing trying to figure out what all those codes are on food packaging. Whether cans, packaged meat, boxes, pouches or trays, what do all those labels actually mean? Food safety is a big concern in the U.S. and other countries, a fact we realize at Markem-Imaje. As a world leader in marking and coding systems, we want to enlighten consumers (and perhaps a few manufacturers) about the different types of dates on food products. Basically, there are 4 different types of dates you may see on packaging. "Sell-by" or "best by," "Best if used before," "Use by" and closed or coded dates are found on most, but not all foods. "Sell-by" is information for the retailer, and simply tells store managers and employees how long the product can remain on the shelves. Consumers should purchase a product before this date expires. "Best if used by" or "Best before" is not a guarantee that the food is safe to eat, but instead tells the consumer that it's best to eat the food prior to this date for the best quality and flavor. A "Use by" label gives the date that is the last day that the food may consumed while still at its highest quality. This date is determined by the maker or manufacturer of that product. As a manufacturer, you likely know what all of these codes mean - but you can clearly see the importance of concise, quality marking and coding so that consumers know what they're buying. Food safety is becoming a hot topic in the U.S. today, particularly in the fresh produce segment. In recent years, thousands of recalls have been issued due to contamination with bacteria such as Salmonella and E. Coli. Every year, thousands of people become ill after eating tainted foods, and some even die. However, other segments of the food industry are at risk as well. Peanut butter and frozen cookie dough are two items that come to mind that have caused food poisoning outbreaks in the past two years. At Markem-Imaje, we want to help you provide your customers with food labels and marking that is clear, easy-to-read and durable. Marking and coding systems are our specialty. From individual products, the cases those products go into and pallets, we take care of the coding - so you can take care of your customers.
