As America Ages, The Impact Of Packaging Becomes Evident

America's population is getting older, and the impact of packaging is becoming more evident as countless types of packaging are getting harder and harder to open. While there are 46 million Americans today who are 65 years old or older, that number is expected to rise to 98 million in just 43 short years (by 2060) according to the Population Reference Bureau. While packaging presents a challenge for seniors, it also presents problems for packaging suppliers and pharmaceutical companies who must make sure that, while packaging is tamper resistant and preserves the integrity of the product, seniors can open them.

Many of our aging population live alone, with no one to help them open a prescription bottle or other type of packaging. Most of us lose strength and dexterity as we age, and arthritis, osteoporosis, and other conditions make opening packages a very frustrating task.

Not only does the aging of our country impact consumers' ability to easily open packages, it also means businesses could be facing lost revenue and consumer trust as those who are older often leave those products that look hard to open on the shelf.

Elderly people often have vision problems as well, creating an even bigger challenge. According to some, peelable seals used on containers are particularly troublesome for seniors, who often can't find the seam where the seal can be lifted. Typically applied using a process involving induction-heating, several factors can result in seals that are not easily removed by the consumer, including excess heat in activating the surface of the liner seal or excessive pressure between the liner and bottle neck finish. Many of the most reputable manufacturers of liners are working to develop solutions that meet the needs of the aging consumer in an effort to make peeling seals easier for older individuals, while protecting product quality and supporting brands with logos and designs specific to the customer.

Restrictive designs in packaging simply won't work for companies anymore, considering our population is continuing to age, while at the same time, pharmaceutical containers and packaging must remain tamper-resistant and maintain the integrity of the product.
