Flexible Packaging Is Great, But Could It Be Improved?

Flexible packaging has made our lives so much easier, from barbecue sauce and dog shampoo in pouches to motor oil, microwavable rice, even cake frosting. While they're great, could they be improved? Many believe so, according to a recent article at Packaging Digest. Flexible packages have their benefits, including decreased distribution costs and less waste, but what could be made better? Flexible could be given a job, according to some who say that by completing a task such as dispensing, mixing, or measuring, the product would stand out more to consumers shopping the shelves, and provide a better overall user experience. Lots of frosting brands now offer squeezable pouches, but what if those pouches also provided "tips" that allowed the consumer to decorate cookies or cakes? Betty Crocker has done just that. Flexible packaging for those on the go. Today, consumers' behavior is one that is busier than even a decade ago. Juice boxes were once all the rage, but could it be even easier? Today, Capri Sun offers a big pouch designed for adults in the form of a pouch with reclosable cap. One baby food brand came out with screw-on spoons for their squeezable pouches, making the process of feeding infants one step shorter for mothers. Last but not least, manufacturers should be in tune with their audience. What would make the consumer's lifestyle easier and more convenient? While many products today are designed with packaging that reduces a few steps, some products could be even better. For instance, what if those who enjoy protein powder shakes didn't have to bring a shake bottle, plastic bag, and cup along? Could it be easier? One company has come up with packaging that only requires the consumer to add water and shake, with its own mixing mechanism designed right into the package. Packaging improvements never cease to amaze. While we think today's packaging innovations are incredible, what will the coming years bring? Only time will tell. At Markem-Imaje, we find packaging so interesting.
